No one likes the thought of moving in the crisp cold air of the fall and the snow piled steps of the winter. The notion alone can leave anyone with sheer panic and the overbearing feeling of being overwhelmed. “Where do I even start?” is the first common question.

Here are a few tips on how to start and remain sane throughout the process.

1. Make sure to handle your personal affairs first: changing your tires for instance can be one to consider (no accidents while hauling things over to the next destination or a ticket for not changing them by the deadline!) A clearer mind in your personal life can help you focus on the move.

2. Contact movers and ask them how they handle your items / procedures taken in order to ensure the safety of your belongings. Some movers have special boxes that can easily transport clothes and so on, perhaps saving you time and energy.

3. Prepare your most important and essential items in clear bins with a label. Have all your toiletries and your winter gear/clothes ready to go so you can simply throw them in at the last minute. These clear bins will help you identify that these are the first items to unpack or dive into pre and post move.

4. Prepare to plan or plan to fail, they say. Make your lists and keep a “MOVING BINDER”. This binder should include what to do, who is responsible and any costs you need to prepare for.

5. Make sure you’ve booked the snow removal company and know that the steps be done should there be any. Some also keep a shovel and salt on hand as last items to haul in case it is needed.

6. Know the parking situation. Is the street much narrow with a snowfall? What about parking in the area should all your friends be helping the day of? Keep in mind of your surroundings so that you can know what to expect.

7. HEAT! Make sure the heat will be available and ready when you are scheduled to move in. For a clearer guideline of what needs to be done/changed when moving, contact me for a free checklist!
